Bag the Bag, Nashville. Bring Your Own!

Be part of Nashville’s “Bag the bag!  Bring your own!” campaign.
The next time you stop by the store to pick up some items, go packing!  You probably have a reusable bag around the house you could take and it will save you from throwing out the disposable bags you normally get.  Reusable bags are durable, hold more items, can be used indefinitely and reduce waste.

It's estimated that 80-100 billion bags are used in the US each year, and of course, gallons and gallons of oil to manufacture them. EPA estimates that only about 5% of plastic bags are recycled.

How can I be part of Nashville’s “Bag the bag!  Bring your own!” campaign?
Take a bag/s with you to the store.  Look around the house and see if you don’t have some reusable canvas or plastic bags that would work just as well as disposal bags.  Give it a try and take them with you to see just how easy it is to reuse.

How do I purchase a re-useable bag if I don’t have one?
Many stores sell reusable bags or you can purchase one off the web. Just search the web for reusable bags!

Why is it important to bring my own bag?
According to reusablebags.com, each year billions of bags end up as litter or in landfills. Plastic bags do not biodegrade and the production of plastic bags requires petroleum.

What about paper bags?
Using paper bags is not necessarily better than plastic. Both paper and plastic bags use natural resources and cause pollution. In fact, paper bags take more engery to produce than plastic bags. So, the next time someone asks you, "Paper or Plastic," say "Neither" and take your own bag instead.

Where can I recycle used plastic bags?
Most grocery stores (Kroger, Publix, Wal-Mart and Whole Foods) have containers by the entrance for customers to place their used plastic bags. Check out the grocery stores in your neighborhood and recycle those used bags.
