Mayor's Office Internship Program

The Mayor’s Office offers an internship program for students interested in gaining experience in the administration of local government. Unpaid positions are available during the fall, spring and summer semesters. Students must be able to receive course credit and work at least 10 hours per week.

Positions Available

Communication Intern
Reports to the mayor’s Press Secretary
Responsibilities: Help prepare the mayor’s press briefings, maintain the media archives, research information for the mayor’s speeches, distribute the mayor’s weekly public schedule and other communication-related tasks.
Requirements: College juniors and seniors only to apply. Must be a communication, journalism or English major with knowledge of AP style.
Office of Children and Youth Intern
Reports to the Director of the Office of Children and Youth
Responsibilities: Help develop and implement special projects geared toward student achievement and community involvement in public schools, as well as other initiatives focused on ensuring that all of Nashville’s children are healthy, safe and successful in school.
Requirements: College juniors and seniors and post-graduate students only to apply.  Preference given to government and education majors.
Mayor's Youth Council Intern
Reports to the Director of the Office of Children and Youth
Responsibilities: Plan all Mayor's Youth Council meetings and activities for the upcoming school year, oversee general Mayor’s Youth Council business, participate in planning and staffing Mayor’s First Day Festival, and help develop and implement special projects geared toward student achievement and community involvement in public schools.
Requirements: Rising high school senior. Position available in the summer only to Mayor’s Youth Council Chair.
Office of Economic and Community Development Intern
Reports to the Assistant Director of the Office of Economic and Community Development and Director of Special Events
Responsibilities: Assist in the development of plans and incentives for attracting and retaining businesses and tourism in Nashville. Research related to economic and community development issues in Nashville and peer and competitor cities and regions. The ECD intern will also assist with the coordination of special events, films, and parades throughout the city, and the issuance of appropriate event and film permits.
Requirements: A creative thinker with analytical abilities and familiarity with internet research and MS Word. Experience with MS Excel is desirable.
Office of Neighborhoods Intern
Reports to the Director of the Office of Neighborhoods
Responsibilities: Assists in developing and implementing neighborhood initiatives and special projects, as well as assisting with constituent communications. Assists in maintaining relationships with community groups countywide.
Requirements: Open to high school juniors and seniors and college students at all levels. Must be able to type and be proficient in Microsoft Office programs. High-level of inter-relational skills essential. Preference given to government, political science, or other liberal arts majors.
Legislative Intern
Reports to the Legislative Director
Responsibilities: Research and analyze existing bills and resolutions at the local and state level, track legislation with the Metro Council and General Assembly and other tasks as assigned.
Requirements: College juniors and seniors and post-graduate students only to apply. Preference given to pre-law, public administration and political science majors.
General Office Intern
Reports to the Chief of Staff
Responsibilities: Assists with scheduling, answering constituent calls and letters, mail, processing certificates of appreciation and proclamations, as well as assists the mayor’s environmental sustainability manager with various projects.
Requirements: Open to high school juniors and seniors and college students at all levels. Must be able to type and be proficient in Microsoft Office programs.
