PUBLIC WORKS TO INSTALL RECYCLING CONTAINERS ON CHURCH STREET
In an effort to encourage downtown workers, residents and visitors to recycle, Metro Public Works (MPW) has installed recycle containers at 10 locations along Church Street between 4th and 8th Avenues.
Each 31-gallon, powder-coated black recycle container is alongside existing trash cans of the same size and style. They are clearly marked with laser-cut lettering that reads “Paper, Cans and Plastic Only” so the public knows what items to put in them, and will be emptied daily by MPW Waste Management staff. Each recycle container also displays Metro’s signature logo: “Recycle – It’s Nashville’s Nature.”
“The new containers on Church Street are an exciting initiative in Nashville’s on-going recycling efforts and will provide an easy and convenient way for people in the area to recycle,” said Metro Public Works Director Billy Lynch.
Church Street was chosen as the test site for the initiative because it anchors a number of residential developments and has become the new centerpiece of Nashville’s emerging downtown neighborhood.
“With the help of the Downtown Partnership, Public Works was also able to locate a Curby recycling dumpster in the parking lot beside Mad Mod on Eighth Avenue North for downtown residents to use. Providing on-street recycling seemed like a natural next step,” added Lynch.
The following items are what MPW advises should be placed in both the new Church Street recycling receptacles and the recycling dumpster beside 162 8th Ave North:
- Paper of any color
- Junk mail and envelopes
- Newspapers and magazines
- Cardboard
- Aluminum or tin cans
- Plastic bottles and containers
No glass, food waste, plastic grocery bags, Styrofoam or yard waste is permitted. These items need to go in regular trash receptacles.
The Downtown Partnership’s fleet of “Downtown Ambassadors” will assist MPW staff with keeping the new Church Street recycling containers clean, according to Tom Turner, Executive Director of the Downtown Partnership.
