Guidelines on Nashville's Residential Trash & Recycling Collection Program

What do my trash and recycling carts look like?
Trash collection to Nashville residents in the Urban Services District utilizes uniform brown roll-out carts and recycling collection utilizes uniform green roll-out carts. All trash placed in your trash cart needs to be bagged. All recycling placed in your recycling cart should be loose (do not bag recycables).

When will my trash and recycling carts be delivered?
Public Works will start delivering trash and recycling carts beginning late January and early February 2008. Check this page for a schedule.

When will my trash and recycling service begin and how do I know my collection day?
Your trash collection service will begin the week after you receive your trash cart and your recycling collection service will begin the month after you receive your cart. Your trash and recycling collection day should be under the lid of each cart. You can also learn your trash and recycling collection day by calling 880-1000.

Can Metro remind me of my trash, recycling and holiday pick-up days?
Yes. You may sign up for a free e-mail or phone reminder to be notified of your trash, recycling or holiday pick-up days. You can sign up online or by calling 880-1000.

What goes in my recycling cart?
Residents can place any kind of paper, cardboard, plastic bottles or containers, aluminum cans or steel cans in their recycling cart.

What if I need more than one trash or recycling cart?
Residents can request a second trash cart for $45 by calling 880-1000. Residents will not be allowed to have more than 2 trash carts. Residents can request a second recycling cart at no cost.

Who qualifies for a back-door waiver?
Residents who are elderly or have disabilities can apply for a back-door waiver by calling 880-1000.

What happens if I place items outside my cart?
All trash must be placed in your brown trash cart for collection and all recycling must be placed in your green recycling cart for collection. If you have extra trash it can be taken to one of Metro's residential waste and recycling facilities, extra recycling can be taken to one of the recycling drop-off sites (call 880-1000 for locations).

Will Metro pickup my trash in my old trash cart?
If your current trash provider has given you a trash cart, you may need to contact them to see how or when their cart will be removed. Public Works is only authorized to empty trash placed in the Metro provided brown trash carts.

I am moving to another area of Nashville. Should I take my trash and recycling carts with me?
No. Each cart belongs to Metro and is assigned to your address, rather than to you, the resident. If your new home is in the Urban Services District, it should already have a recycling cart; if not, call Curby at 880-1000 to request one.

What if my collection day falls on a holiday?
Recycling is not collected on New Year’s Day, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day. Any collection day that falls on one of these holidays will be picked up on Saturday of that week.

How to Use Your Trash and Recycling Carts

• Look under your cart lid for your pick-up day.

• When your cart is delivered, it will be placed in the same area you will need to put it on collection day.

• On your pick-up day, place your cart on the curb or in the alley with the arrow on the lid pointing toward the street or alley. Your trash and recycling will be picked up between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

• Do not place the cart within 3 feet of any stationary object such as a car, mailbox, utility pole, etc.

• Do not place the cart under wires, tree limbs, building overhangs or other items that could be damaged. Please make sure there is 15 feet of clearance above the cart.

• Items that are placed outside the carts will not be picked up.

• Please remove your cart from the street by 7 p.m. on pick-up day.
