Environmental Compliance
The Environmental Compliance Section is responsible for administering the industrial pretreatment program for MWS and ten satellite communities as required by Federal Regulations 40 CFR 403. The Pretreatment Program regulates the quality of wastewater entering the sewerage system, thereby protecting wastewater treatment plants, biosolids quality, and, ultimately, Nashville and Davidson County’s environment.
Wastewater treatment plants are designed to treat domestic waste. Because treating industrial waste at a publicly owned wastewater treatment plant would be too costly and the most efficient treatment for industrial waste is at the source, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the State of Tennessee, and MWS require that certain industries install industrial waste treatment systems that remove heavy metals or other hard-to-treat pollutants before they enter the sewerage system.
MWS permits approximately 150 industries for industrial wastewater discharge. The Industrial Compliance Section has the responsibility of monitoring these industries’ wastewater discharges through periodic sampling and inspections. The section works with local industries to detect and solve any compliance problems and takes enforcement actions when necessary.
Ensuring the compliance of industries maintains the quality of wastewater entering the sewer system and makes sure that the wastewater treatment plants are able to operate at an optimum level, discharge a final effluent that meets state and federal regulations, and generate biosolids that can be put to beneficial reuse.
