The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County is committed to the professional and personal development of its workforce. The Department of Human Resources, in collaboration with our educational partners, has developed an extensive curriculum designed to enhance individual skills and group capabilities.
The training program is designed to support the needs of our employees. New employees are provided a suite of mandatory courses for completion within the first 90 days following their start date. We provide all Metro employees with a variety of courses that are relevant, applicable, and interactive.
Mandatory Courses
Per Executive Order, the following courses are required for all employees.
To be retrained every two (2) years:
- Cybersecurity Awareness (Online)
- Cybersecurity Fundamentals (Online)
Note: Together these two courses meet the mandatory requirement to complete cybersecurity training.
To be retrained every four (4) years:
- Diversity and Inclusion (Online)
- Domestic Violence & Workplace Response (Online)
- Drug-Free Workplace Policy (Online)
- Sexual Harassment Prevention (Online)
In addition to the mandatory trainings for employees, supervisors must also complete the following trainings every four (4) years:
- Domestic Violence & Workplace Response for Supervisors (VILT)
- Drug-Free Workplace Policy and Sexual Harassment Prevention for Supervisors (VILT)
Conditional Mandatory Courses
Per Executive Order and Metro Ordinance, the following courses are mandatory for certain employees, dependent upon their specific job tasks and responsibilities, per their department’s discretion.
HIPAA Compliance (Online)
- The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) course is mandatory if an employee handles and/or is exposed to Protected Health Information (PHI) during their job duties; this includes oral, physical, and electronic PHI.
- This course requires a mandatory retraining annually.
DDC (Online or ILT)
- The Defensive Driving (DDC) course is offered in partnership with the National Safety Council and is mandatory if an employee either (1) drives a metro vehicle or (2) drives their personal vehicle and claims reimbursement for mileage.
- This course requires a mandatory retraining every three years.

Leadership Development Series
We offer two optional leadership development series for Metro supervisors and managers.
Supervisor Development Institute (SDI)
This series is geared towards newer supervisors and consists of four courses in a blended format (Online and VILT).
To be eligible to attend, supervisors must have at least one direct report per FLSA guidelines.
Metropolitan Management Institute (MMI)
This series is geared towards experienced managers and consists of four courses (ILT only).
Managers must have two direct reports per FLSA guidelines, and meet one of the following time requirements to be eligible:
- If the manager has no previous completion of SDI or MMI, they must have at least 2 years' experience in their managerial role at Metro
- If the manager has previously completed SDI, they must have completed it at least a year prior to the MMI offering
- If the manager has previously completed MMI, there is no time requirement
Please note that SDI and MMI entail a significant time commitment, and therefore prospective participants must have their direct supervisor’s approval in order to register. Both series are offered periodically throughout the year. For more information about upcoming offerings and registration logistics, prospective attendees should contact their departmental Human Resources (HR)/Training Coordinator.

Employees register for Online courses by clicking on their desktop icon or by clicking on this LMS link. Use either Chrome or Edge internet browsers to access.
To register for courses in any other format, employees should contact their departmental Human Resources (HR)/Training Coordinator. Please note that some courses require certain criteria be met prior to registration.
Delivery Formats
Online – This is a training that is available within the LMS and is self-paced to be taken as the employee’s schedule allows.
Instructor-Led (ILT) – This is a training that is held in-person within a classroom setting and is scheduled for a specific time and place.
Virtual Instructor-Led (VILT) – This is a training that is accessible through a virtual platform such as WebEx or Zoom and is scheduled for a specific time.
Blended – This is a training that is comprised of activities in at least two of the different delivery formats together.
