The Digital Navigator model, created by the Digital US Coalition in 2019, is a flexible approach that allows community organizations to integrate digital inclusion into their existing services. For Metro Nashville and Davidson County, this model taps into our strong nonprofit network to bring digital support to residents on a larger scale.
Flexible and Customizable
This model is designed to provide essential digital literacy skills and connect people to adult education and upskilling programs, helping to build digital resilience in our communities. Digital Navigator programs do more than just teach digital skills—they also assist with finding low-cost internet access and offer tech support.
The Role of a Digital Navigator
An ideal Digital Navigator works closely with residents, through in-person or remote interactions, to guide them along their digital journey. Whether it’s basic digital skills or advanced training for small businesses, a Navigator assesses each person’s needs and connects them to the right resources. By cross-training staff at trusted community organizations, we ensure they can help residents access crucial online services, from education and employment to housing and food assistance, all while offering ongoing support.
By linking multiple organizations offering digital navigation, we expand each group’s ability to support their clients and enrich their lives.
The Process
So how do Digital Navigators find the resources residents need? In 2023, Metro Nashville surveyed 68 nonprofit organizations, pinpointing community resources. The information we collect through this ongoing process enables Digital Navigators to customize services to fit the unique needs of our residents and tap into a broad network to better serve them.
With training provided by a trusted statewide partner, local organizations are equipped to deliver this critical support, ensuring we’re building a more connected, inclusive community for all.
