Resolution RS2019-1601 (as amended)

A resolution approving a Sister City relationship with Chengdu, China and authorizing the Mayor to execute a Sister City charter.

WHEREAS, the Sister Cities idea was inaugurated in 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, to establish friendship and understanding between the people of the United States and other nations through person to person exchange; and

WHEREAS, all succeeding U.S. Presidents have endorsed said program, to be conducted for the broad purpose of the exchange of ideas and people between the citizens of the United States of America the peoples of other nations; and

WHEREAS, to the Metropolitan Government (City of Nashville, Tennessee), through its Council, does recognize and endorse this program with the hope that it will lead to a lasting friendship between the people of Nashville, Tennessee, United States of America and Chengdu, China to encourage the development of cooperation between the residents in all domains and in particular in the areas of business, tourism, culture and arts, government and education; and

WHEREAS, three Metropolitan Government Councilmembers have visited Chengdu and found it to be an ideal city to join and develop close ties that will help grow our respective music industries; and

WHEREAS, Nashville has a lot to offer to guide their evolution as a creative hub and to encourage greater copyright protections for songwriters, publishers and artists as they move progressively in making Chengdu the “Music City of Asia”.


Section 1. That the Metropolitan Council, on behalf of the people of Nashville, Tennessee, United States of America, does hereby extend an invitation to the government and the people of Chengdu, China to participate with Nashville, Tennessee as its Sister City for the purpose of creating greater mutual understanding and to promote a future of liberty and peace by creating a world of friendship and further authorizes the Mayor to execute a Sister City Charter.

Section 2. That the Metropolitan Clerk is directed to send a certified copy of this Resolution to Mayor David Briley and to the Mayor and Foreign Affairs Office of Chengdu, China.

Section 3. The Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
