A resolution recognizing the inauguration of Fisk University’s 16th President, Dr. Kevin G. Rome, Sr.
WHEREAS, on July 1, 2017, Dr. Kevin G. Rome, Sr. became the 16th President of Fisk University located in Nashville, Tennessee; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Rome was officially inaugurated as President of Fisk University on April 5, 2018; and
WHEREAS, Fisk University commemorated the event with an Investiture Ceremony, a Presidential Scholarship Gala at Music City Center, and a live production of The Wiz along with other celebratory activities during the Spring Arts Festival Week; and
WHEREAS, Fisk University was founded in 1866 and established by John Ogden, the Reverend Erastus Milo Cravath, and the Reverend Edward P. Smith, and named in honor of General Clinton B. Fisk; and
WHEREAS, Fisk University is the oldest institution of higher education in Nashville, Tennessee and continues to attract outstanding faculty and students who continue to enhance the University’s national reputation for academic excellence; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Rome is a native of Columbus, Georgia and holds a bachelor’s degree from Morehouse College, a master’s degree from the University of Georgia, and a doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Rome has over twenty years of experience in higher education; and
WHEREAS, before his presidency at Fisk University, Dr. Rome served as President of Lincoln University of Missouri, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management at North Carolina Central University, Vice President for Student Services at Morehouse College, Vice President for Campus Life at Clayton State University, and Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Life and Diversity at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis; and
WHEREAS, during his tenure at Lincoln University, Dr. Rome managed a multi-million dollar budget and oversaw the operational efficiency of the university; and
WHEREAS, Fisk University sought a transformational leader who would be able to shape university’s future and accelerate their growth as a leader in the Liberal Arts and STEM disciplines; and
WHEREAS, in January 2018, the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Campaign Fund recognized Dr. Rome as one of the Ten Most Dominant HBCU Leaders, for his outstanding success as a leading force of change at multiple universities; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council recognizes and celebrates the inauguration of Fisk University’s 16th President, Dr. Kevin G. Rome, Sr.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:
Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as recognizing the inauguration of Dr. Kevin G. Rome, Sr., the 16th President of Fisk University.
Section 2. The Metropolitan Council Office is directed to prepare a copy of this Resolution to be presented to Dr. Kevin G. Rome, Sr.
Section 3. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
