Agriculture and Commercial Horticulture

Some of the programs offered and presented by the Commercial Horticulture Department of Davidson County Extension include:

• Middle Tennessee Landscape Management Short Course
• Commercial Pesticide License
• Pesticide applicators training

Licenses for Commercial Pest Control Operators are issued in 12 separate categories. To obtain a license in the category for which you are going to do pest control work, you must pass the required exams. Training classes for Category 3, Horticulture, Lawn and Turf are made available in January, April, July and October, coinciding with exam dates. The training classes for Horticulture, Lawn, and Turf cover the general standards, weeds, insects and diseases. Davidson County Master Gardeners

Master Gardener classes usually begin in February, and meet evenings once or twice weekly for ten weeks. A horticultural notebook is provided as part of the class fee charged. Professors and other professionals share their knowledge and experience. Certificates of attendance are issued to those who complete the required number of classes. To obtain your Master Gardener Certificate, you must complete 40 volunteer hours in addition to attending the classes.

State-wide there are approximately 2,000 active Master Gardeners in 46 counties. Master Gardeners who continue to participate in the program return at least 25 hours of service with a minimum of 8 continued education hours annually.
