Background: In 2017, Metro Action mobilized 4 mobile café diners to address a barrier identified in high poverty areas where youth resided. The youth in these communities did not have a facility in their area where the agency could provide summer meals funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Summer Food Program. The diners enabled the agency to drive into communities to provide meals as well as programming during the summer months as the diners "hung out" with the MAC team. The mobile diners are refurbished school buses that were converted to diner-style eating cafés for youth. The buses are also utilized for outreach events such as community events and festivals, mobile customer service centers for families seeking assistance such as utility and rental payments and registering pre-school students for Head Start or Early Head Start. The diners also are equipped with generators which allow for air conditioning, Wi-Fi and power outlets for electronic devices.
The Metropolitan Action Commission POWER Youth Program is intended to support and encourage youth development in and out of school. This mandate supports Nashville Mayor Freddie O'Connell's vision to build safer communities for youth while also providing a pathway for the successful transition from youth to adulthood for the residents of Davidson County.
