Today, Mayor John Cooper’s Office released a PSA encouraging Nashville and Davidson County residents to practice road safety and pay attention to their surroundings when driving. In the PSA, the Mayor’s Office reminds drivers to slow down, stop texting while driving, and watch out for cyclists and pedestrians.
In 2019, Davidson County had 103 fatal crashes resulting in 107 deaths. Of those crashes, 33 were auto-pedestrian fatalities. At least 15 of the 33 pedestrians were impaired. A contributing factor in 28 of the 33 deaths was the pedestrian being in the roadway outside of the crosswalk. As of January 2020, five deaths have already occurred.
“My administration has committed to Vision Zero to help eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries to help protect all Nashvillians,” said Mayor Cooper. “I am also counting on all of our drivers to increase their vigilance on our roadways and sidewalks to help reduce avoidable crashes and make our streets safer.”
Mayor Cooper and his Office is also encouraging cyclists and pedestrians to follow traffic signals and traffic laws.
