Nationally, households with low to moderate incomes spend an average of three times more of their income on energy costs than other households with higher incomes.
Annually, the Metropolitan Action Commission (MAC) distributes over $7 million to approximately 10,000 residents within Davidson County to defray the cost to power, heat and cool their homes as well as to help keep residents housed as the county and nation remains challenged by the availability and affordability of housing.
In terms of supporting families with low incomes within the county, the agency has been at the forefront of driving economic mobility outcomes for these households by leveraging local, state, and federal funding.
On Tuesday (October 1), Metro Action will begin accepting applications for the 2024-25 application period which will help with electricity, natural gas, water, rent and mortgage payments. Funding also covers the cost of prescriptions, property taxes, rental, and utility deposits.
To qualify, applicants must be income eligible, reside in Davidson County and meet other eligibility criteria. The range of support for utility assistance is between $600-$1000 depending on energy burden and household size. Up to one month of assistance is provided for rental and mortgage payment help.
To apply, residents can access the application by visiting the agency website (nashville.gov/mac) or calling the agency call center (615-862-8860).
Applications can also be requested by email ([email protected]) or by visiting the Metro Action’s new headquarters location (1281 Murfreesboro Pike, Nashville 37217).
The Metropolitan Action Commission receives federal funding for its assistance programs through the Tennessee Housing Development Authority Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program and Tennessee Department of Human Services Community Services Block Grant.
Metro Action’s assistance program runs from October 1 to the following September.
