THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY

Subject: Creation of the Juvenile Justice Commission, and Appointment of its members
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Government has recently completed the construction of a new juvenile court and administration building; and
WHEREAS, criminal acts by juveniles in the area of the Metropolitan Government continue to increase; and
WHEREAS, the Metropolitan County Council recently adopted Resolution No. R94-1007 requesting the appointment of a Juvenile Justice Commission to study juvenile crime and the juvenile justice system within the area of the Metropolitan Government; and
WHEREAS, in order to provide better public safety for Metropolitan Government residents and to promote the general health and welfare of juveniles, it is appropriate to create a Juvenile Justice Commission to conduct a study on juvenile crime and the entire juvenile justice system;
WHEREAS, the Director of Health and the Director of Social Services should also be members of the Juvenile Justice Commission;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Philip Bredesen, Mayor of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, by virtue of the power and authority vested in me, do hereby direct and order the following:
That there be created and established the Juvenile Justice Commission (hereinafter referred to as "Commission") which in addition to me or my designee shall be comprised of the following persons:
(i) The following ten (10) officials of the Metropolitan Government or their designees;
(a) Juvenile Judge;
(b) Chief of Police;
(c) District Attorney General;
(d) Public Defender;
(e) Director of Schools;
(f) Director of Parks;
(g) Chief Librarian;
(h) Director of Finance;
(i) Director of Health; and
(j) Director of Social Services
(ii) the Chairperson of the Juvenile Court Committee of the Nashville Bar Association; and
(iii) one (1) member each designated by the:
(a) Nashville Urban League;
(b) Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce; and
(c) Nashville Chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, Inc.
The Commission shall have the following purpose:
(i) To undertake a study of juvenile crime and the juvenile justice system within the area of the Metropolitan Government; and
(ii)report its findings and recommendations to the Metropolitan County council and me so as to provide for an improved juvenile justice program and to reduce. crime.
