The safety and well-being of our employees is very important, and to guard it, Metro tries to identify and eliminate employee exposures to avoidable hazards and conditions that can lead to injury, illness or accidents. Metro departments have Injury and Illness prevention programs to comply with federal and state regulations, laws and statutes, and help maintain a safe and healthful work environment.
Safety is everybody's job. All employees are encouraged to remain alert and correct hazardous conditions and unsafe acts – if it is safe to do so – and/or report them to their supervisors.
To assist supervisors and employees, many Metro Departments have professional safety staff available. If you have a health or safety concern, you should first discuss the issue with your supervisor. If you are not comfortable discussing the issue with your supervisor or this does not resolve the problem, you should contact the occupational safety and health staff for your department. If you are not sure who to contact, call the Human Resources Occupational Safety and Health Division at 615-862-4379.

Slips and Falls
In addition to sprain and strain injuries, Metro employees are involved in a high number of slips, trips and falls. Slips-and-falls account for more U.S. workplace injuries and deaths annually than any other accident category. Most falls result in lost workdays, broken bones, bad backs, even permanent disability. Slips-and-falls are preventable, and it only takes a few simple steps to ensure your workplace remains safe for you and your coworkers.
The Most Common Causes of Slips and Trips
- Inattentiveness – always pay attention to where you’re walking
- Wet or worn surfaces – inspect surfaces carefully and clean up non-chemical spills
- Materials, tools, boxes and trash left lying around — keep your walk and work areas clean
- Raises or drops in the floor’s elevation — be aware of those areas of floor height change
- Old, worn or inappropriate footwear — wear slip-resistant shoes that are right for the job
- Poorly lit areas — never enter a poorly lit area and notify supervisors of such areas.
