Frequently Asked Questions
The Sports Authority serves as a financing mechanism, owner, and landlord for Nashville professional sports facilities. The Sports Authority Act, T.C.A. 67-6-103, grants the Sports Authority the ability to implement a ticket surcharge and collect state and local sales tax generated by ticket, concession and merchandise sales. These revenues are used to pay Metro’s bond obligations on its facilities. Board Members of the Sports Authority are appointed by the Mayor for terms of six years.
The Metropolitan Sports Authority is often confused with the national chain of sporting goods stores The Sports Authority and The Nashville Sports Council who bids, markets, and solicits sporting events to Nashville.
The Metro Sports Authority Serves to plan, promote, finance, construct, acquire, renovate, equip and enlarge buildings; operate sports complexes, stadiums, arenas, structures and facilities for public participation and enjoyment of professional and amateur sports, fitness, health and recreational activities; conduct itself to do what is reasonable and necessary to attract professional sports franchises to Nashville; and offer spaces for Special Events or parking needs at Nissan Stadium.
