The Nashville Office of Emergency Management announced progress on tornado recovery efforts in neighborhoods impacted by the devastating March 3 tornadoes.
Metro Nashville Public Works as of 4 p.m.
In the immediate aftermath of the tornado, Public Works crews have been focused on coordinating with emergency responders and utility companies to clear the right-of-way, make roads passable, and provide assistance with closing and reopening roads.
While crews are still focused on the efforts above, we are also continuing process of removing curbside debris from affected areas.
- A total of 2 right-of-way crews consisting of 3-5 people and 6 inspectors worked 12-hour shifts. Crews are out from 6:30 a.m.–6:30 p.m.
- Traffic signal crews have been working 12-hour shifts since the tornado.
- Deployed 3 VMS signs to help direct people to volunteer sites.
March 13, 2020
- 10 MPW trucks and 27 Contractor trucks collecting storm debris from 6:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Trucks will continue circulating throughout affected areas multiple times over the next few days and weeks.
- MPW is encouraging residents to move debris to the curb and leave it there. Instructions for how to separate debris can be found on the Public Works website.
- MPW has 3 Public works employees working at 3 Disaster Assistance Centers.
Clearing Roadways and Alleys
- 116 roads were initially closed as a result of the tornado.
- 114 roads have been reopened.
- 2 roads are still currently closed.
- 60 alleys total were impacted.
- 60 alleys have been cleared of debris.
- 0 alleys are still currently blocked with debris.
Repairing Traffic Signals
- 72 total traffic signals were damaged, or lacking power
- 71 signals have been restored
- 1 is being repaired and public works will coordinate with NES for power.
Repairing and Replacing Signage
- 263 stop signs have been repaired or replaced
- 1 temporary stop sign has been installed
Household Waste/Trash
- We had 6 trash trucks running in North and East Nashville picking up household trash.
- We will add trash capacity in Donelson and Hermitage as it becomes needed.
- Total tons of trash since March 7 – 104.52
Amount of Debris Hauled
3,214 loads totaling 132,740 cubic yards of debris have been hauled to transfer sites as of 4 p.m. today.

- Metro Parks has cancelled all programming due to COVID19:
“The suspension of programming and classes means there will be no Spring Break programming for children and no day programs for seniors. Patrons who have event reservations scheduled at any community center, from March 16 – March 23, will have the option of a complete monetary refund or to reschedule their event. Additional programs and classes that will be suspended beginning March 16 include:- competitive athletic games in community center gyms;
- fitness classes at the Centennial Sportsplex and Regional Community Centers;
- the department’s disABILITIES program for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities;
- art, music, theater, dance, and nature center classes and programs;
- programs and classes at Fort Negley and Two Rivers Mansion;
- group tours and field trips at the Parthenon;
- tennis clinics at Hadley Park and the Centennial Sportsplex;
- no open swims at any pool. Lap swims only.”
