The National Weather Service forecasts a heat index of 102 degrees.
The Nashville Office of Emergency Management is urging the public to use caution in dangerous heat that is expected for most of Thursday in Davidson County.
The National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts a heat index of 102 degrees. The heat index is a measure of the level of discomfort to the average person as a result of the combined effects of the temperature and humidity in the air.
According to the National Weather Service, the heat and humidity will result in an increased risk for heat-related illnesses. The very young, the elderly, those without air conditioning, and those participating in strenuous outdoor activities will be the most susceptible.
Also, car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes. Remember to check the backseat! The effects will worsen with each successive day of the heat and humidity.
Precautionary/Preparedness Actions
You should drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
Make sure you know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the occupational safety and health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.
Heat stroke is an emergency, call 911.
