The mission of Human Relations is to protect and promote the personal dignity, peace, safety, security, health, and general welfare of all people in Nashville and Davidson County. The Commission’s work is organized around a theme of “One City for All People.” This motto guides all Human Relations education, training, advocacy, and compliance services.
Projects and Programs
The Metro Human Relations Commission identifies innovative solutions for improving access to fundamental goods, information, and services. Our staff implements initiatives and projects that are strategic, intentional, and purposeful in addressing various forms of inequity.
Policy and Research
We develop data-driven and equity-oriented policy papers and research reports regarding issues of inclusion in Davidson County. These projects identify points of intervention, craft short and long-term recommendations, and serve as mediums of public education for constituents, community leaders, and policy makers.
Events and Outreach
Whether it’s speaking to a small group of stakeholders about LGBT inclusion in the workplace, co-sponsoring fair/affordable housing initiatives, or organizing a city-wide, multicultural festival for 70,000 people, the MHRC is constantly promoting Nashville as “One City for All People.”
The Metro Human Relations Commission is composed of seventeen volunteer Commissioners, appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by Metro Council. The full board, Executive Committee, and Standing Committees meet monthly in accordance to the schedules on the Human Relations Commission page. All commission meetings are open to the public, free of charge, and governed under standard parliamentary procedure.
