Nashville has many large and small organizations that provide various types and levels of information and service to people with disabilities. The Disability Information staff serve as source for information about disabilities and related resources and resource for fostering public awareness and understanding of disabilities and people with disabilities.
The Disability Information staff provide information to guide callers to those local resources that may be able to assist them with issues related to their disabilities. Staff are typically available Monday through Friday, from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. If no one is available to answer, callers may leave voice mail.

Although the Disability Information staff cannot assist individuals with getting disability payments or resolving disability claims through Social Security or another agency, the links below may provide information or connect you with those able to assist.
Also, it may be of help to know that, in Tennessee, the state Department of Human Services, Disability Determination Services is under contract with the federal government to process Social Security and Supplemental Security Income disability claims.

Architectural Barriers Act (ABA) Standards apply to facilities designed, built, altered, or leased with Federal funds.
ADA Standards are issued by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Department of Transportation (DOT) and apply to places of public accommodation, commercial facilities, and state and local government facilities covered by the ADA.

Access Board is a federal agency that promotes equality for people with disabilities through leadership in accessible design and the development of accessibility guidelines and standards for the built environment, transportation, communication, medical diagnostic equipment, and information technology.

Relay Service
7-1-1 Relay Service allows people with hearing or speech disabilities who use text telephones or teletypewriters (TTYs) to have telephone conversations with people who do not have TTYs. Dialing 7-1-1 works whether or not the person placing the call is using a TTY since communications assistants use voice and TTY. The confidential service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and local calls are free of charge, however long distance toll charges may apply.
Internet Protocol or IP Relay Service offers a communication alternative for people with hearing or speech disabilities who have an Internet connection. Local and long distance communications by IP Relay Service are free of charge. The service can be accessed at: T-Mobile IP Relay Service.
