Metro Government of Nashville and Davidson County is committed to the management of vehicle emissions for the health of our citizens and guests. Electric vehicles (EVs), which are powered by batteries instead of an internal combustion engine, greatly reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. The shared Electric Vehicles in the city’s consolidated fleet, managed by the Department of General Services, are a step in the right direction for a more sustainable Nashville.
The Electric Vehicle Shared Program began in 2012 as a pilot program with just two electric vehicles on the Fulton Campus, available to employees of two departments – Finance and General Services. It has since been rolled out to multiple agencies on the Fulton Campus, and also to agencies at four other sites.
There are electric vehicle coordinators for General Services, Parks and Health. These coordinators manage the use of the vehicles and the initial training of those employees who desire to be authorized users of the shared vehicles. The Sustainability Division of General Services provides potential applicants a training video to understand how the program works. All electric vehicles are available on a first come, first serve basis for city business during normal business hours.
We encourage all Metro employees to participate. With its environmental benefits and convenience for employees, the shared Electric Vehicle program has been a great success. In 2021, the program logged 28,337 miles, saving 18,627 pounds of the greenhouse gas CO2.
For non-Metro employees, we encourage you to consider how your place of employment might benefit from a program like this. We would love to speak with you about it! Contact me, Edna Jones, Electric Vehicle Coordinator, at [email protected].
There is good news for the future of the Electric Vehicle program in Metro Government. Ordinance No. BL2019-1598 requires that all motor vehicles (with exemptions) owned by the Metropolitan government be zero-emission vehicles by the year 2050. General Services’ shared Electric Vehicle program is a step in the right direction.
