Coyotes
In Middle Tennessee, it is not uncommon for residents to see coyotes in their neighborhoods. These wild animals resemble a small German Shepherd dog weighing 20-30 pounds and can live almost anywhere, including fields, forests, farmlands, shrubland, suburban neighborhoods and urban areas. These animals are very adaptable and are attracted to homes when food sources are available (such as pet food, garbage/compost, bird feeders, and even small pets.) Coyotes are most active at dusk and dawn, and they share similar behaviors to domestic dogs.
Residing in an area where coyotes live means you might come into contact with them at some point. Follow these steps to ensure you are safe if you encounter a coyote:
- Do not feed coyotes – remove food sources and attractants and secure garbage, recycling and compost bins.
- Supervise your pets, especially small toy breed dogs and cats.
- Keep coyotes wary – if you are approached, act big and make loud noises to scare them away.
