Metro Animal Care and Control (MACC) is waiving adoption fees and covering spay/neuter surgery costs for the approximately 110 rabbits available for adoption at the shelter. The rabbits came to MACC as a part of a cruelty case in early May, and a judge ordered for custody to be relinquished to MACC in mid-June.
Sixty rabbits were initially pulled from the home, some of which arrived at the shelter pregnant. This resulted in more than 50 rabbits being born in MACC’s care, bringing the total number of rabbits to more than 110. Approximately 60 rabbits are of age and currently available for adoption at MACC. The rabbits born at MACC will be made available for adoption once they are one month old. Rabbit adoption fees will continue to be waived until all of the rabbits have been rehomed. The adoption fee for a rabbit at MACC is usually $5.00.
MACC will pay for the cost of spay/neuter surgery when adopters arrange to go to Little House Animal Hospital in Franklin, TN, Cats on Commerce in Clarksville, TN, or Avian and Exotics Center of Nashville. Most veterinarians recommend rabbits be 5-6 months old before the surgery.
"Our staff and volunteers have worked tremendously hard for the past 8 weeks to care for these delicate creatures on a daily basis, and we need the help of the community to find them wonderful forever homes," said Ashley Harrington, MACC Field Supervisor. "Rabbits make excellent house pets and can even be litter-trained! They live for 8 to 10 years and can acclimate to households with other pets."
MACC is located at 5125 Harding Place, Nashville, 37211. The shelter is open every day from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. with extended evening hours until 6:00 p.m. on Thursdays.
