Metro Nashville’s Housing Division has awarded funding to Nesterly Inc., to launch the Homesharing Program, which aims to help match people who have extra space in their homes with a guest who is seeking long-term, affordable, healthy, and safe housing. Homesharing is an innovative solution that has the potential to increase housing opportunities, including affordable housing opportunities, without requiring any additional dollars to be spent on new construction. Beyond increasing the supply of housing, it can help long-standing residents, especially older adults, remain in their homes and communities by providing a safe and easy way to gain additional monthly income, receive optional help around the house and connect with individuals often from another generation.
Nashville’s first homesharing program is being spearheaded by Nesterly along with local partners. Nesterly provides a user-friendly technology platform to match hosts with potential guests that ensures a safe, comfortable, and productive living arrangement for all participants. This is not a service of the Metro Government, and the Metro Housing Division is not a direct provider of these services.
Across the country, homesharing programs have shown to have positive impacts on older adults who may benefit from making a little bit of extra income while addressing social isolation. The program is poised to make a difference in the lives of both older homeowners and home seekers of all ages. Homesharing can help keep Nashvillians – both homeowners and renters – in the communities they know and love.
How to Participate
The pilot program is available to all interested homeowners and renters seeking housing. The ultimate success of the program will depend on having enough available hosts sign up to participate. If you are a resident of Davidson County and have additional space in your home and are interested in serving as a host, please sign up at www.nesterly.com.
Not quite ready to sign up but want to learn more? Fill out this interest form and a member of the Homesharing team will connect with you!
Program Timeframes
Nesterly and local community partners are conducting outreach to households who may be interested in participating as hosts. Guest outreach is anticipated to take place in early Spring 2025. The program is expected to launch and begin matching hosts and guests by Summer 2025.
Nesterly Platform
Nesterly’s platform is focused on security and screening of potential hosts and potential guests, as well as providing a flexible rental framework for homeowners who might be interested in arranging a few hours of assistance with household chores over the month in exchange for a reduction in rent.
The platform manages listings, helps screen homeowners and renters, and provide an easy way to collect rent that removes the responsibility from the homeowner. For more information about the Nesterly platform, check out the Frequently Asked Questions.
