Chapter 10.64 of the Metropolitan Code of Ordinance is the adopted Fire Prevention Code for the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County. As part of this ordinance, the 2018 editions of NFPA 1 and NFPA 101, along with their listed amendments, have been adopted as the Metropolitan Fire Prevention Code. In reference to grills on balconies, the Metropolitan Fire Prevention Code states:
(2018) NFPA 1 – Section 10.10.6 Cooking Equipment
- 10.10.6.1 For other than one- and two-family dwellings, no hibachi, grill, or other similar devices used for cooking, heating, or any other purpose shall be used or kindled on any balcony, under any overhanging portion, or within 10 ft (3 m) of any structure.
- 10.10.6.2 For other than one- and two-family dwellings, no hibachi, grill, or other similar devices used for cooking shall be stored on a balcony.
It is the policy of the Nashville Fire Department Fire Marshal’s Office to not allow the use, placement, or storage of any unapproved cooking devices or LP Gas containers on balconies (including those for multifamily dwellings), under any overhanging portion, or within 10 feet of any structure.
