The operations division of the Nashville Fire Department consist of two bureaus, suppression and emergency medical service. The majority of emergency responses will be from front line personnel assigned to specific equipment within one of these bureaus
Suppression
The Fire Suppression Bureau has been dedicated to its profession of protecting Nashville since 1807. The service began with volunteers and transitioned into a paid profession in 1860. This bureau encompasses more than just firefighting, it is also responsible for specialty rescue as well as medical first response.
Nashville Fire Department staffs 39 fire stations throughout Davidson County. Due to having large volumes of medical responses, each apparatus is equipped for initial immediate on-scene treatment.

Emergency Medical Services
The Emergency Medical Service was established in 1974 for the Nashville Fire Department and maintains the highest quality level of care responding to any medical incident requiring immediate care. All medical responses receive an advanced life support paramedic unit. The unsurpassed level of care that Nashville offers along with renowned medical direction creates a dynamic life saving system.
Currently Nashville staffs 33 advanced life support transport units 24 hours a day every day of the year. There are additional units added for some special events such as Independence Day (Fourth of July) to maintain the demand for increased medical responses.
