The majority of Fire Department encounters a variety of emergencies, not just fires. They respond to medical emergencies as well.
Becoming a Firefighter, EMT or Paramedic with the NFD is not easy, but with the right attitude and dedication, it can be accomplished.
The first steps to working for the Nashville Fire Department include submitting an application. Once your application has been evaluated and accepted you will be notified, via e-mail, of test dates, time and location. If you are successful in the employment testing you will be placed on the eligibility list. Please note all communication for the application and testing process is electronic. You must provide accurate contact information, specifically a valid e-mail address and ensure the information is current and up to date throughout the process.

The Nashville Fire Department is anticipating the possibility of later establishing a hiring registry for an entry level Firefighter I class with the minimum requirements being State of TN certified AEMT/State of TN FFII the NFD would like to provide important information that could assist you in reading for the process. Currently, there is not a date scheduled to take applications for either an entry level Firefighter Recruit or Firefighter 1 lateral class at this time. If interested, click on the employment opportunities section to sign up to be notified when any potential Firefighter positions are posted.
To obtain information on the process and to answer questions you may have regarding requirements for an entry level Fire Recruit or Firefighter 1 lateral class, please see the FAQ section. In addition, if you currently maintain certifications but are not licensed in the State of Tennessee the FAQ section also contains information on being granted reciprocity with the State of Tennessee for AEMT licensure and Firefighter II certifications.
Requirements to Work as a Firefighter
The minimum qualifications applicant's must meet in order to take the Firefighters entrance examination include:
1. Must be 21 years of age and an U.S. citizen at the time of hire.
Candidates may file applications two (2) months prior to their twenty-first (21st) birthday; however they may not be appointed until they are at least twenty-one (21) years of age.
2. Must have a High School diploma or GED
3. Must meet NFPA Standard 1582 Medical Requirements for Fire Fighters.
Must have received the state of Tennessee Emergency Medical Technician certification upon completion of the Fire Training Academy. Failure to complete EMT license within the term of the training or to maintain license on a continuous basis will result in termination.
Upon completion of the Training Academy employee’s classified as Firefighter may rotate between Fire Ooperations and EMS Operations Division based upon a schedule and will be assigned to a Fire Station or to an Ambulance, depending on department needs. Assignments may be long or short term and are subject to change as needed.
Requirements to Work as an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT)
1. Must be 21 years of age and an U.S. citizen at the time of hire.
Candidates may file applications two (2) months prior to their twenty-first (21st) birthday; however, they may not be appointed until they are at least twenty-one (21) years of age.
2. Must have a High School diploma or GED
3. State of Tennessee license as an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician
4. We no longer require the “F” endorsement.
Requirements to Work as a Paramedic
1. Must be 21 years of age and an U.S. citizen at the time of hire.
Candidates may file applications two (2) months prior to their twenty-first (21st) birthday; however, they may not be appointed until they are at least twenty-one (21) years of age.
2. Must have a High School diploma or GED
3. State of Tennessee license as a Paramedic.
4. We no longer require the “F” endorsement.
