‘Ain’t Gon’ Let Nobody Turn Me ‘Round’ Black and White Women and the Underground Rail Road
a public lecture by
Margaret Washington, Ph.D.
Marie Underhill Noll Professor of American History, Emerita
Cornell University
Black and white women abolitionists played a major role in the Underground network yet are rarely written about, acknowledged, or understood for their impact on American history. Nonetheless, women’s participation in facilitating black freedom was significant enough to give rise to another movement. This presentation centers on the much-neglected Underground work of black and white women abolitionists. Women’s Underground activism on behalf of the enslaved, helped usher in a movement on behalf of women. This presentation will demonstrate how the Underground Railroad was a circuitous route to the 15th and the 19th Amendments.
