Metro Parks Director Monique Odom today announced the launch of Music City Pulse, a new podcast that focuses on the city’s diverse music community. The podcast is designed to strengthen and highlight Nashville’s music scene through thoughtful, informative and entertaining interviews with people who are active in the local music community.
“I am excited about our new podcast,” said Odom. “Whether you are a member of the music community or a lover of music, this podcast will inform, inspire and entertain. It’s another platform that helps Metro Parks extend our programs and services into the community.”
Music City Pulse is the brainchild of Metro Park’s Mike Teaney, who in addition to being the department’s Program Coordinator for Music and Special Events, will host the bimonthly program. “My hope is to provide a glimpse into the past and present of the music community of Nashville through diverse perspectives while giving locals who are involved with music a place to share what they are up to and ideally connect and network with other musicians,” he explained.
Music City Pulse is available for streaming and download today with new episodes available on the 1st and 15th of each month. The podcasts can be found by searching for Music City Pulse on Soundcloud.com. The first three episodes of the podcast features:
- Nermin Begovic, an accordion and guitar player from the former Yugoslavia who now calls Nashville home. He performs traditional Balkan music around Nashville with his band, Natchez Trace.
- Local R&B icon Jimmy Church who started playing music in Nashville in the 1950’s and is still playing with the Jimmy Church Band. He has a lot to say about an exciting era in Nashville’s musical history.
- Kelly Corcoran, the artistic director and conductor of the Nashville-based contemporary music ensemble Intersection. She has also conducted professional orchestras all over the world.
The Music City Pulse podcast is a program of Metro Parks’ Music Division, which provides recreational music opportunities to Nashville and surrounding communities through classes, performances and special events. The department’s Music Division is the perfect platform and Mike Teaney is the perfect host for the city’s new podcast. During his time in Nashville and particularly at Metro Parks, Mike has had the opportunity to work with musicians from literally all over the world.
Originally from West Virginia, Mike arrived in Nashville in 2001. He came to Nashville looking for opportunities to work in music while still being relatively close to home. He has a performance degree in classical guitar as well as an Associate’s degree in Electronic Engineering Technology. When he landed in Nashville he worked as a staff engineer at 17 Grand Recording. He was also working for Metro Parks as a part time seasonal employee assisting with summer concerts at the time. As a musician Mike plays guitar as well as banjo and performs regularly with the group, The Contrarian Ensemble. In 2005, he released an album of original instrumental music, The Meantime.
