The city’s Parks Board unanimously approved a request by the Indigenous Peoples Coalition to change the name of Cumberland Park to “Wasioto Park,” the original Shawnee name of the Cumberland River. The unanimous vote came during the Parks Board regular monthly meeting.
The Parks Department solicited public input for the name change which resulted in a total of 236 votes with 208, or 88% in favor of the name change, and 28, or 12% against changing the name. Public input was received by the department via phone, letters, email, and in-person responses over a 30-day period.
The name change goes into effect immediately.
