The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department has a history of over 50 years in developing and expanding social services, crisis response, and mental health counseling within a law enforcement setting. The Behavioral Health Services division oversees a number of these services, which are provided by licensed psychologists, police crisis counselors, specially trained police officers, peer supporters, and police chaplains. This division has been recognized by the Department of Justice as a model for law enforcement mental health and wellness programs in the nation.

The Behavioral Health Services Division Manager coordinates all pre-employment psychological examinations and fitness-for-duty evaluations provided by licensed psychologists, who adhere to the guidelines recommended by the International Association of Chiefs of Police. In addition to overseeing division operations, education, and training, the manager serves as mental health liaison to the department and community as a whole.
