Within the Sworn Wellness Unit there are a number of programs that focus on specific types of support for department employees, their families, and the community. The Sworn Wellness Unit is staffed primarily by trained police officers. Some specific services are wellness outreach, support for deployed reserve officers, veterans, and retirees, mentoring, and training and development. In 2022, the Unit welcomed Toby, the very first Metro Nashville Police Department support dog. A graduate of the “Paws and Stripes College” of the Brevard County Sherriff Office, Toby (along with handler Chaplain Marsha Brown) assists by offering emotional support as well as working with the canine unit in their community engagement efforts.
