Professional Wellness Section includes the Counseling Unit and the Sworn Wellness Unit. The Counseling Unit provides counseling and advocacy services to law enforcement employees and their immediate family. These services are provided free of charge. The services provide individual, couples, and family counseling, critical incident stress management, education and training, support/therapy groups, and mental health response for major disasters. Counseling and support is available to address a variety of issues, including marriage/family, couples/relationships, children/adolescents, stress management, depression, grief and loss, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, substance addictions and sexual addictions.
The Professional Wellness Section recognizes that when a critical incident or trauma occurs, the entire family is affected. Therefore, critical incident stress management interventions are available to the employee and their family members. We are committed to providing these services in a culturally sensitive environment. All clients are respected and quality services are provided regardless of race, religion, creed or sexual orientation. Our staff is fully licensed by the Tennessee Health Related Boards.
Who can use the Counseling Unit Services?
Any member of the department or their immediate family can access our services without going through the chain of command. The routine channels of communication and supervisory approval don’t apply when talking to one of our counselors. You can use sick leave, annual leave, personal days or your off time for your appointments.
The use of the service is voluntary and at no cost to you. While a supervisor may, on occasion, mandate someone to our services, the only information provided is related to your attendance and compliance with treatment. If you are not mandated, your visits will remain strictly confidential.
If you choose to utilize services elsewhere, we will be more than happy to help you find a private professional in your area that has experience in working with law enforcement and their families. In these cases, the fees for treatment may be reimbursable according to your individual medical benefits. We will be glad to assist in anyway possible.
