The Safe Place symbol is used with permission by the Seattle Police Department and depicts a police shield surrounding the colors that traditionally have symbolized the LGBTQ community since the 1970s; however, it is important to note that the symbol is meant to encourage the reporting of all bias crimes, in all communities, not just the LGBTQ community.
The MNPD Safe Place decal is meant to convey inclusion and intersectionality with any and all individuals, regardless of their race, political beliefs, nationality, age, gender, gender identity/expression, sexual orientation and/or identification, or any other differences either actual or perceived.
Use of the Safe Place Decal
To safeguard the meaning of the Safe Place symbol, the decal should only be displayed and used after committing to the Safe Place principles and with the express permission of the Metro Nashville Police Department. To obtain a Safe Place Decal for your business or school, please contact the Metro Nashville Police Department’s LGBTQ Liaison or sign up to participate in the program.
Placement of the Safe Place Decal
The MNPD Safe Place decals should ideally be placed 3'-5' from the ground, near the front entrance of the building. For schools, the decals should be placed at the front office, or school counselor's office.
The following image is a sample of the Metro Nashville Police Department Safe Place Decal. It has a rainbow-colored, badge-shaped image with the words "Metropolitan Nashville Police Department SAFE PLACE safeplace.nashville.gov" inside. The background is dark blue with the words "Report Hate Crimes" above the badge and "This location is a SAFE PLACE for victims of Anti-LGBTQ crimes and harassment to call 911 and wait for police to arrive. EMERGENCY CALL 911" below the badge.
