Update: The Camry driver who died in this morning’s collision has been identified through his fingerprints as Carlos D. Atilano, 26, of Antioch.
MNPD Homicide Sergeant Trevor VonDohlen is hospitalized at Vanderbilt with serious injuries as the result of this morning’s 2:15 a.m. two-vehicle crash on Bell Road at Mt. View Road in which a Toyota Camry veered into Sergeant VonDohlen’s travel lane and struck his police Ford Edge SUV head-on. The driver of the Camry, an as yet unidentified man who appeared to be in his 20s, died at the scene.
The investigation shows that the Camry was traveling south on Bell Road toward the interstate when, for reasons unknown, it ran over the right curb, veered back to the left and into a northbound travel lane in which Sergeant VonDohlen was driving.
At the time of the collision, Sergeant VonDohlen was traveling to Creekview Drive to supervise the investigation into a reported suicide. His emergency equipment was not activated.
Sergeant VonDohlen, 37, is a 12-year veteran of the MNPD.
