A court hearing is set for tomorrow in the aggravated robbery case of Willie Joe Buford, 65, who is accused of confronting and robbing a 36-year-old teacher at LEAD Cameron School on 1st Avenue South as she arrived in the parking lot just after 7 a.m. Tuesday.
The victim reported that a stranger, subsequently identified as Buford, approached, pulled a butcher knife, and demanded her cash. When she told Buford that she had no money, he robbed her of her keys, cell phone, watch, and air pods. She said he then made her go into the gym, where he pushed her into a closet. He then fled in the victim’s Honda Accord.
Buford drove the victim’s car to a downtown parking garage and then boarded a city bus. He got off the bus on Murfreesboro Pike. South Precinct officers tracked Buford using the victim’s phone and took him into custody later Tuesday morning at I-24 and Murfreesboro Pike. Buford subsequently showed officers where he left the victim’s car.
Charges in addition to aggravated robbery are anticipated as the case moves through the court system. Buford remains jailed in lieu of $100,000 bond.
