Elias Marquez-Henriquez, 28, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of reckless endangerment, and aggravated burglary after firing shots Thursday night toward officers who were investigating a residential break-in in the 500 block of Foothill Drive.
A man and woman arrived at their home at 5:45 p.m. and discovered that the sliding glass rear door had been broken out and the residence ransacked. They went to a neighbor’s house and called police.
South Precinct Officers Andrew Brazee, Amgad Bekhit, Parker Vegas, and Joseph Hurst quickly arrived, spoke to the homeowners, and then entered the house through the front door, loudly announcing their presence. Officers Brazee and Hurst went to check the back bedrooms while Officers Bekhit and Vegas went to check on the living room and upstairs. As Officers Brazee and Hurst started down the hallway, gunfire erupted. Three shots were fired through an interior wall, barely missing both officers. Elias Henriquez-Marquez had been hiding inside a bedroom where he fired a pistol belonging to the homeowner. The officers retreated to positions of cover and requested backup. After Special Response Team officers arrived, they made loud and repeated announcements, including in Spanish, for Marquez-Henriquez to come out of the house. Negotiators also attempted to make contact with Marquez-Henriquez. After approximately four hours, Marquez-Henriquez was seen walking inside the home. After he still refused to exit, officers with the help of a MNPD canine team, entered the house and Marquez-Henriquez was taken into custody without further incident. He appeared to be intoxicated.
At the time of his arrest, Marquez-Henriquez was free on $1,000 bond for his arrest last month for vehicle theft. He was stopped on Murfreesboro Pike driving a pickup truck that had been reported stolen on February 16 from a Briley Parkway hotel parking lot. His photo is being withheld pending investigation into other crimes committed Thursday prior to the burglary.
