Update: The two men killed in today’s 1:15 a.m. multi-vehicle collision on I-24 are identified as Bradley Parrott, 45, and his father, William Parrott, 72.
Daniel Caravaca-Bonilla remains jailed on $580,000 bond.
Arrest warrants charging two counts of vehicular homicide by intoxication have been issued against Daniel Caravaca-Bonilla, 25, the driver of a 2021 Ram 2500 pickup truck that today at 1:15 a.m. collided with the back of a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado on I-24 East near the Rutherford County line killing both occupants of the Silverado, a 45-year-old man (driver) and his 72-year-old father (passenger). Both men were from Illinois and died at the scene. Efforts are underway to notify their next-of-kin.
The preliminary investigation shows that traffic was slowing down on I-24 due to an approaching construction zone. Multiple vehicles were merging over to the far left lane of travel when Caravaca-Bonilla drove into the rear of the Silverado at a high rate of speed, causing the Silverado to collide with an Infiniti QX50 which struck a Ford Fusion which then collided with a Chevrolet Malibu. No one in those vehicles was seriously injured.
There was no indication of braking on behalf of Caravaca-Bonilla prior to the collision. During the investigation, open alcohol containers were located in Caravaca-Bonilla's Ram truck. He exhibited indicators of impairment but refused testing. A search warrant was obtained for a blood draw with results pending.
In addition to vehicular homicide by intoxication, Caravaca-Bonilla also faces seven counts of aggravated assault, DUI, handgun possession while under the influence, and an implied consent violation.
