A Nashville man arrested Tuesday for the third time since May remains in jail under a $90,000 bond on charges of auto theft, gun theft, and four counts of auto burglary.
Derryon Lyons, 21, has been identified as the man seen on surveillance video in a 3rd Avenue South parking garage July 29 breaking into several vehicles and then stealing a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Subsequent investigation led to the recovery of the stolen Jeep and a gun that had been taken in a County Hospital Road vehicle burglary on July 23.
At the time of his arrest Tuesday on Lewis Street, Lyons was free on $14,000 bond stemming from a July 13 arrest on charges of felony evading, evidence tampering and unlawful gun possession. In that case, Lyons sped away after an MNPD officer attempted to stop him. The car he was driving matched the description of one that had been used to commit vehicle burglaries in the preceding days. With the assistance of an MNPD helicopter, detectives located and arrested Lyons, but not before he tried to conceal a gun in a BBQ grill.
At the time of the July 13 arrest, Lyons was free on $1,500 bond stemming from a May 2 arrest for domestic assault.
During a search of Lyons’ Lewis Street residence on Tuesday, detectives recovered a gun and property taken in yet another vehicle burglary from Sunday.
The investigation that led to Lyons’ arrest is part of the MNPD’s continuing Operation 72 (10-72 is the police code for auto theft) precision policing initiative to combat vehicle crime. Since February, that operation has resulted in the recovery of 346 stolen vehicles, 131 guns, and a month to month continuing decline in the crime of auto theft when compared to 2023.
