The investigation into this morning’s shooting of a 23-year-old man outside his home on Smokey Hill Road shows that he was wounded in an exchange of gunfire with persons who had broken into one of his vehicles parked in the driveway.
The victim is hospitalized and is expected to recover.
After reviewing surveillance video, detectives determined that car burglars first arrived outside the victim’s home at 4:08 a.m., pulled on handles of locked car doors, and then left. Less than 10 minutes later, the burglars returned. One served as a lookout while the other broke into the sunroof of one of the cars. Moments later, they were confronted by the victim and his brother who were both armed. Multiple shots were fired by the car burglars, the victim and his brother. The burglars fled.
There is no indication to this point that the car burglars were hit. Detectives from the Specialized Investigations Division are working to identify them.
The MNPD strongly cautions auto burglary victims about confronting suspects. As we have seen in this and other cases, they often have guns.
