Update: The man killed in Thursday’s incident on Buchanan Street has been identified as Darrell Walker, 47, of Atlanta.
A man has died following Thursday’s 10:30 p.m. physical altercation that led to him being run over by an SUV on Buchanan Street at Northwest Liquors.
Perry Shannon, 50, was inside the store when he was approached by a shirtless man who reportedly initiated a confrontation. Shannon left the store and got into his Chevrolet Equinox when the shirtless man approached his vehicle. He began punching Shannon and a second man who tried to intervene.
The intervening man was knocked to the ground by one of the shirtless man’s punches and was lying in the parking lot when Shannon attempted to back out to leave with the shirtless man hanging onto his SUV. In doing so, Shannon ran over the man.
The unidentified shirtless man ultimately let go of the vehicle and fled the scene. North Precinct detectives are working to identify him, with charges anticipated.
Shannon left, but later returned to the scene.
The man who was runover was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died. Efforts continue to positively identify him and locate his family.
Shannon had an unrelated, outstanding warrant. He was taken into custody and additionally charged with driving on a revoked license and not having insurance.
