An employee of a state-contracted litter pickup crew was seriously injured on I-65 north near Harding Place just before noon today when he was struck by a vehicle on the right shoulder of the interstate.
Raymon Cruz-Sanchez, 48, of Cedar Hill, Tennessee, is hospitalized at Vanderbilt in critical condition.
The investigation shows that Cruz-Sanchez, who was wearing a reflective safety vest, was outside a Dodge Ram pickup truck equipped with a trailer. He was throwing trash into the rear of the trailer when a Hyundai Azera sedan pulled onto the shoulder of the roadway and hit him. Cruz-Sanchez was pinned between the trailer and the vehicle. The 27-year-old driver of the Hyundai said she was experiencing mechanical problems when drove onto the shoulder. She showed no signs of impairment.
No charges have been placed at present. The investigation is continuing.
