Mike Hagar
Assistant ChiefMike began his career with the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department in 1990, working as a patrol officer. He then served in the Traffic Section, investigating crashes with an emphasis on traffic crash reconstruction, and as an officer in the Strategic Development Division (formerly Planning & Research Division). After promotion to Sergeant in 1998, he was assigned to the Traffic Division Section and supervised the Hit and Run Investigation unit.
Promoted to Lieutenant in 2001, he served at the Police Training Academy supervising the Operations, Academics, and the Confrontation Management Sections before transferring to the Legal Resources Section (formerly Case Preparation Division) as division supervisor. Also in 2001, Mike assumed the responsibility of serving as on-site legal advisor to the SWAT Team and other departmental components during critical incidents and mass gatherings.
Promoted to Captain in 2004, he served as a Field Supervisor during the overnight hours, a position that provided oversight to all departmental operations during the overnight hours. Before becoming the Director of Training at the Police Training Academy. In 2008, he was appointed as division commander of the Identification Division (Crime Lab) and later, the Strategic Development Division which includes the Planning, Accreditation, Crime Analysis, Research and Evaluation Sections.
He was appointed as Deputy Chief of Police in 2017 and assigned to the Executive Services Bureau, before becoming Assistant Chief of Police in 2022.
Mike holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Middle Tennessee State University and a Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree from the Nashville School of Law. He is a licensed attorney and member of the Nashville and Tennessee Bar Associations.
He has completed the Tennessee Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar (TLEEDS), the Police Executive Research Forum’s Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP) at Boston University and staffed by instructors from Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Leadership in Police Organizations training program.
Mike is a member of the Tennessee Association of Chiefs of Police, the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the Police Executive Research Forum.
