Metro Public Works announced today that it has taken over trash collection in portions of the Urban Services District (USD) that were annexed in 2017. This change has been made as part of an effort to optimize waste collection across the USD and provide high-quality service to residents across the county. These areas in districts 7, 8 and 9, having been serviced by Red River Waste Solutions (RRWS) since 2018, will now be serviced by MPW crews on the regularly scheduled pick-up dates. Red River Waste Solutions will continue waste collection in other portions of the USD.
“We believe that by taking over these routes in the recently annexed areas north of Briley Parkway, we’re going to be able to improve waste collection service across much of Nashville,” said Sharon Smith, Public Works Assistant Director. “The COVID-19 pandemic has presented some unique challenges to waste collection in Nashville, in terms of increased tonnage of materials and driver and mechanic shortages. We’re seeing this happen all across the country, and we’re working diligently with our contractors to address these challenges as they become more acute.”
With this change, Metro Public Works crews will assume two additional routes per day, for a total of eight additional routes over the course of the week. Employees will be reallocated and reassigned within Public Works to meet the demand of this additional service. Crews began picking up these areas as of yesterday, July 29, 2020.
“I’m optimistic that Metro Public Works crews will provide high-quality service to residents in my district, and that these changes will allow service enhancements for residents in all of Nashville,” said Nancy VanReece, Metro Council Member for District 8. “I’m grateful to the department for offering creative solutions to meet the needs of these challenging times.”
In addition to these long-term changes to trash collection in portions of districts 7, 8, and 9, Metro Public Works will be providing short-term support to our contractor, Red River Waste Solutions as needed. Public Works crews will be supplementing efforts by RRWS across Davidson County to meet the immediate trash collection needs of our customers. Some routes currently being serviced by RRWS may temporarily be serviced by MPW crews beginning immediately.
