Sidewalks are a building block of a well-rounded transportation network and one of the most requested services at the Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure. Nashville Department of Transportation is responsible for all aspects of Nashville’s sidewalks, from master planning the city’s newest projects to repairing damage to our most historic sidewalks.

Frequently Asked Questions
There may be instances where access is temporarily impacted when driveway aprons are reconstructed in conjunction with sidewalk installation. If driveway access is required during this time, the project manager and construction contractor will coordinate access with the property owner during construction.
Temporary lane or road closures may be necessary during construction of the sidewalk and stormwater infrastructure. If temporary lane or road closures are required, traffic control measures will be in place and access to properties will remain available. In the event a road closure is necessary, detour routes will be provided for managing traffic flow.
If private property hardscaping is located within the right-of-way, it may be disturbed during construction of the new sidewalk. Property owners will be notified prior to construction so they have the opportunity to safely remove any private property located within the right-of-way. Metro is not responsible for replacing private hardscaping installed within Nashville Department of Transportation property.
The construction contractor is directed to minimize disturbance to vegetation when installing new sidewalks. Property owners will be notified prior to construction so they have the opportunity to safely remove any landscaping for replanting after the sidewalk construction is complete. In some cases, tree removal within the right-of-way may be necessary for sidewalk construction.
Bus stop locations and access may be temporarily or permanently changed as part of sidewalk construction. Coordination efforts are made with WeGo to assure adequate access to transit is provided.
