The Nashville Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure (NDOT) houses a variety of initiatives and programs dedicated to making our transportation system safe and equitable. The Transportation Demand Management Program works to maximize the transportation system efficiently by encouraging and educating the community about the region’s sustainable modes of travel in order to reduce traffic congestion, greenhouse gas emissions, and vehicle miles traveled. Transportation demand management programs promote strategies that move single occupancy vehicle (SOV) trips to non-peak hours and to incentivize travelers to use other modes of transportation including public transit, walking, biking, teleworking, carpooling, and micromobility devices.
A recent Forbes report ranked Nashville the worst city in the United States for commuters with drivers spending an average of 29.60 minutes on travel time to and from work. Only 2.6% of households in Nashville don’t have a household vehicle. Traditional solutions to unprecedented growth and traffic congestion include adding new roads and lanes to existing roadways but we’ve learned through studies this only increases demand for drive alone travel.
The Center City District in Philadelphia reports Downtown Nashville has experienced the most rapid and strongest urban post-pandemic recovery in the United States. Changing travel patterns, is the fastest and most cost-effective way to manage traffic congestion. NDOT’s Transportation Demand Management Program aims to educate and incentivize visitors, residents, and commuters on the quickest, easiest, and most affordable travel options available in Davidson County.
