The Nations Neighborways bikeway improvement project will add multiple “neighborway” bikeway types to streets in the Nations neighborhood of Nashville. These neighborways are streets with fewer people driving at slower speeds, where people biking can safely and comfortably share the road with people driving. Neighborways typically feature traffic calming treatments, such as speed cushions and traffic circles as seen in the Nations Neighborways, to maintain slow speeds and prioritize local traffic access.
The Nations Neighborways projects are located on Georgia Avenue, Indiana Avenue, and Kentucky Avenue, connecting to the 51st Avenue cycletrack. Because Georgia Avenue sees higher speeds and a greater number of people driving, this bikeway will feature a protected bike lane on the north side of the street, with a buffered bike lane and on-street parking on the south side of the street, in addition to traffic calming.
Community engagement for the Nations Neighborways project has been ongoing for several years, with the most recent activities in winter 2022 through 2023. The project will be installed in spring 2023.
May 2023 Update
Nashville Department of Transportation is currently installing the Nations Neighborway bikeway. Construction includes the following:
- "Sharrow" (share the road) bikeway pavement markings on:
- 49th Ave between Kentucky and Indiana
- 52nd Ave between Kentucky and Indiana
- Kentucky between 49th and 52nd aves
- Indiana between 49th and 52nd aves
- Mini-roundabouts for traffic calming at:
- Kentucky and 49th Ave
- Kentucky and 52nd Ave
- Indiana and 49th Ave
- Indiana and 52nd Ave
- Georgia and 52nd Ave
- Bikeway on Georgia Ave between Delray Drive and 51st Ave:
- Protected bike lane on the north side of Georgia between Morrow Rd and 51st Ave
- Buffered bike lane and on-street parking on the south side of Georgia between Morrow Rd and 51st Ave—note on-street parking will no longer be allowed on the north side of Georgia
- Striped bike lanes between Delray Dr and Morrow Rd
- Traffic calming speed cushions
