Homicide Unit detectives are investigating a self-defense claim in this afternoon’s fatal shooting of Bryan T. Lewis, 32, in the 600 block of Charles E. Davis Boulevard in Napier housing.
The man who admits to shooting Lewis, Edrick Doak, 23, told detectives that he believed Lewis was about to shoot him when he pulled his own pistol and fired. Lewis died after being transported to a hospital.
The investigation shows that Doak was carrying a box of canned goods to an apartment from a vehicle. Lewis rode up on a scooter and accused Doak of shooting at him on a previous date. Doak denied it. Lewis began getting off the scooter and appeared to be trying to pull a gun from his waistband. Doak dropped the box of canned goods, pulled his own gun, and shot Lewis. Doak fled on foot, later surrendering at police headquarters.
During an interview with detectives, Doak said he had received word from others that Lewis was going to kill him.
The fatal shooting investigation will be staffed with the District Attorney’s Office at its conclusion. No charges have been placed against Doak in regard to this case. He was, however, arrested on an unrelated outstanding domestic assault warrant.
