Youth Services detectives this afternoon charged a 13-year-old 8th grader at Haynes Middle School with aggravated assault and gun possession on school property as the result of an altercation with a fellow 14-year-old student this morning in a school restroom.
The investigation shows that the two students fought last week. Today, the 13-year-old armed himself and confronted the 14-year-old in the restroom. The 14-year-old fled and ran outside of the school to get away. The 13-year-old also ran out of the building and admitted to firing one shot from the nine millimeter semi-automatic pistol once outdoors. The 13-year-old fled to a wood line behind the school. He was taken into custody unarmed by a North Precinct officer on nearby Liberia Street. The gun was recovered later in the day from the wood line with the assistance of an ATF dog that specializes in locating firearms in outdoor settings.
It has not been determined how or where the 13-year-old obtained the gun.
