Chief John Drake and Rabbi Joshua Kullock of the West End Synagogue this morning marked Saturday’s beginning of Passover by Chief Drake assuming legal ownership of the congregation’s leavened products through the April 20 duration of the holiday.
Jewish families are prohibited from owning bread and leavened products associated with grains during the holiday, and in many instances, place those items in a closet or cupboard that will stay closed during Passover. Rabbi Kullock is given power of attorney by members of his congregation to transfer ownership of the products to a non-Jew until Passover has ended. For 31 years, that person has been Nashville’s police chief.
In appreciation for this annual tradition and the MNPD, the West End Synagogue is making a donation to a local charity.
